Some Words (and Flowers) For Our Mothers . . .

It has become a well-established tradition to give our Mothers the gift of flowers for Mother's Day. Flowers symbolize life and fertility and therefore they are an apropos gift to the women who gave birth to each and every one of us.

I grew up in a home with very little money, but there were always flowers. We raised much of our own food to make ends meet, but at least two to three rows of our precious garden were always reserved for flowers. My grandmother, a flower garden aficionada, began this tradition and my mother took up her mantle once my grandmother became wheelchair-bound. As a kid, I was never too fond of having to pick tomatoes or cucumbers, but I did love spending time selecting the prettiest dahlias for a tabletop vase.

After years of living on a farm (and many long, childhood hours spent planting, weeding, picking, and canning vegetables), I said goodbye to gardening forever when I moved away from home to attend college.

Or so I thought.

Once I had my own children, a desperate need to plant roses surfaced from somewhere deep in my psyche. Then I, like my mother and grandmother before me, found myself cultivating large swathes of flower gardens around every home we have ever owned.

I suspect it is a mother's inner magpie that motivates us to beautify our homes, our nests. Or perhaps it is just because our own mothers instilled the appreciation of beauty into us when we were children.

I know mine did.

In honor of Mother's Day, I will share a few photos of flowers from my gardens; the ones that will always remind me of my mother & my grandmother -- because they are beautiful.

Easter Musings . . .

Easter.
It's the Season & Celebration of Come-Backs.

Easter marks the time of year when life springs back up from an environment that,
for all intents and purposes, appears to be dead.

At Easter, millions of people around the world reflect on & celebrate what they consider to be
"The Ultimate Come-Back Story":  The Resurrection of Christ.

Serve Our Willing Warriors LOVES a Come-Back Story.
In fact, there is nothing we love more than to be a part of someone's Come-Back Story.
To see a Warrior reunited with his family, friends, and country is always a miraculous event.

We are so grateful for our Come-Backs;
those Willing Warriors that made it home!

And we are so(ww) grateful to have a small part in saying "Welcome Home"
in the midst of their Come-Back journey.

As we celebrate Easter, let us be thankful that we live in a country
that allows all manner of religious freedom.

Let us say a prayer of thanks for the Warriors + Their Families
that provide us with that rare and precious gift.

Have a Blessed Easter

A Wonderful Season of Come-Backs!

A SOWW Valentine: This Is What Love Looks Like!

SOWW President, Shirley Dominick, gives a hug to one of our Willing Warriors

It's Valentine's Day, so let's get right to the heart of the matter:

Every Day is Valentine's Day at Serve Our Willing Warriors!

At SOWW, we are so blessed because we get to witness Love in Action every single day!
What we regularly observe isn't the traditional gift of flowers and a box of chocolates.
(Although we really, really like flowers and chocolate!)
Instead, we have the privilege of witnessing all manner of different expressions of love that come gift wrapped in the time, talents and donations of our community of volunteers.
(On a DAILY basis!)

So here is our version of a Valentine's Day card:
THIS is what Love looks like at Serve Our Willing Warriors.

And Magically, A New Year Begins!

2015 closed in a glorious way . . .
With a lovely full moon during Christmastide!
(The first in almost forty years!)

I saw the glimmering moon peeking over the hillside of the Bull Run Warrior Retreat as I was driving by, just before twilight.  The sight was so breathtaking that I had to pull over to take a picture with my cell phone.

It was both stunning and serene to stand at the foot of the driveway and watch "La Luna" rising slowly, centered between the entrance's stone pillars. Knowing that we had a Willing Warrior Family spending their holiday together, snug inside the retreat's house made the moment even more beautiful.  A peaceful retreat -- the epitome of a perfect Christmas gift.

Truly A Magical Moment!

So here's to 2016 . . .
May it be magical for you and yours;
May it radiate with the warmth known as "Home" all year long!

Happy New Year from All of Us at Serve Our Willing Warriors!
